Faculty of law, business & economics
Information Systems & Sustainable IT Management

Gilbert Fridgen, born 1980, is University Professor of Information Systems and Sustainable IT Management at the University of Bayreuth, Deputy Director of the Project Group Business & Information Systems Engineering of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT), and Deputy Director of the Research Center Finance & Information Management. Furthermore, he is founder and co-director of the Fraunhofer Blockchain Lab. Prior to his position in Bayreuth, he started his academic career at the University of Augsburg. From 2011 to 2013 he was Deputy Professor for Business Engineering, especially Finance, Operations & Information Management. From 2010 to 2013 he pursued his habilitation in Information Systems Engineering. From 2005 to 2010 he did his doctorate on IT risk/return management. From 1999 to 2005 he earned a Diploma of Managerial Economics as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Electronic Commerce.

In his research, Gilbert Fridgen focusses on three major topics. Since 2015, he analyzes the business potential of the Blockchain technology, builds up the Fraunhofer Blockchain lab, conducts workshops and projects with industry, and authors first publications in the area. In his research he is checking Blockchain systematically and analytically for its potential in today’s economy. Beginning with his habilitation he started to build economic models for the smart grid, aiming at advancing the German energy transition. He especially addresses Demand Side Management, i.e. the dynamic adaption of electricity demand to the increasingly volatile energy production, spanning the boundaries between management, information systems, and engineering. Furthermore, beginning with his doctorate, he addresses topics of IT transformation, i.e. the long-term evolution of large IT systems that are prone to a high complexity and therefore high risk. In various publications, he develops and evaluates innovative methods of analyzing IT portfolios in order to manage their associated risk, e.g. based on statistic measures or graph theory.

Gilbert Fridgen published many papers in renowned outlets. According to the most common and most relevant ranking for German Business Schools (JOURQUAL3), he regularly publishes papers in category A journals and conference proceedings.  Several of his papers were published in the Senior Scholars’ Basket of Journals which lists the eight internationally most renowned journals in the information systems discipline. He was nominated and won best paper awards at the most important conferences on information systems in Germany and Europe. He edited conference proceedings of the most important German, European and International Conferences of Information Systems. He is an active reviewer for various journals such as Business & Information Systems Engineering, Electronic Markets, IEEE Systems Journal, the Journal of Information Technology, and Management Information Systems Quarterly. Professor Fridgen was a visiting scholar at the Terry College of Business (University of Georgia) in spring 2013 and is in regular exchange with colleagues from the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Gilbert Fridgen was granted 7-digit research funds from European, German and State programs, the largest one being SynErgie, a platform for the aggregation of industrial energy demand flexibility funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with a total of 100 million Euros over 10 years. In terms of fundamental research, he was granted a project for the value based management of IT projects by the German Research Foundation (DFG). While collaborating closely with companies and public institutions he acquired further third-party funds for applied research projects, i.a. from partners such as Audi, Baur Versand, Hilti, McKinsey, Nord/LB, and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. Altogether he has accumulated many years of experience in managing fundamental and applied research projects and leading people in a project setting.

Gilbert Fridgen is member of the board of the Elite Graduate Programme “Finance & Information Management”, a joint program of the University of Augsburg, the University of Bayreuth and the Technical University Munich, which was ranked one of the best graduate programs in management in Germany three times in a row by the renowned Centre for Higher Education. Since 2016, he is member of the Programme Commission of the E.ON Stipendienfonds. The E.ON Stipendienfonds is a non-profit foundation (member of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) focusing on academic exchange between Germany and Norway in the area of energy research. He received the Cultural Award Bavaria in 2010.
