Information Systems and human-centric Artificial Intelligence

Portrait

Niklas Kühl is a W3 professor and holder of the Chair for Business Informatics and Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bayreuth. He also holds a leadership position at the WI institute of the Fraunhofer FIT. Additionally, he is a member of the core competence center for finance and information management and a senior expert in artificial intelligence at IBM. His research focuses on the intersection of machine learning and its application in innovative contexts in industry and society. He combines technical and human-centered methods in the development of socio-technical information systems, including automated recognition of needs in social media, machine learning across enterprise boundaries, the development of robust and scalable AI products, the design of human-AI collaboration, research into appropriate human trust in AI decision-making, the establishment of fairness in AI decision-making, and the impacts and benefits of AI for sustainability issues.

From 2020 to 2023, Niklas Kühl worked as a managing consultant in data science at IBM, where he led AI projects in the energy sector. From 2017 to 2023, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI) of the KIT, where he established and led the Applied AI in Services Lab. He earned his PhD with summa cum laude in 2017 from KIT on the topic of "Needmining: Automated Analytical Support for Customer Need Elicitation." Before that, he studied industrial engineering, also at KIT. During his studies, he gained practical experience at Porsche Business Services in Chicago, Porsche AG in Weissach, and aleo solar GmbH in Oldenburg.

Niklas Kühl collaborates with various international institutions where he completes regular research stays and presents the results of his research. These include the University of Warwick, the University of Auckland, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas at Austin. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, including contributions to journals such as Cognitive Systems Research, Communications of the AIS, Journal of Cleaner Production, Business & Information Systems Engineering, Information Systems Frontiers, Electronic Markets, Journal of Service Management, Information Technology & Management, Flexible Services and Manufacturing, and conference proceedings such as AAAI, ECML/PKDD, ACM FAccT, ACM CSCW, ACM/AAAI AIES, ACM IUI, IEEE ITSC, IEEE/ACM CCGrid, ICIS, ECIS, HICSS, IEEE CBI, and others. His contributions have been awarded various Best Paper Awards.

He is a member of the German Data Science Society (GDS), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the Association of University Professors and Lecturers in Business Administration (VHB), and the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV). In 2015, he founded the Education for Refugees e.V. association, which provides systematic educational opportunities in STEM subjects for refugees. He served as chairman for seven years.
